I’m not your dreamgirl.

I wrote “dreamgirl.” for the woman who can never seem to find her way off the pedestal. Virgin and whore. Along the way, I realized how powerful of a symbol Marilyn was for this anthem. She was everything every woman wants to be and everything we know we can’t be. Perfection. The epitome of male gaze. Wife. Little girl. Helpless, yet powerful beyond belief. An insufferable force to be reckoned with. Terrifying and meek. What is it about women that causes men to mythologize us? To be a woman is to resist, whether you realize it or not: our very existence is a resistance.

To be a woman is to perform. To be a woman is to resist.
